At Parklands Primary School, we are passionate about preparing children not only for their next stage of education, but for life in modern Britain.
Our Personal Development curriculum is a strength of our school and sits at the heart of everything we do. Through a carefully planned programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, Religious Education, safeguarding, enrichment and pupil leadership opportunities, children develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to become respectful, resilient and responsible members of society.
Fundamental British Values are not taught in isolation; they are lived and experienced every day through our curriculum, school culture and wider opportunities.
The five Fundamental British Values are:

- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
These values underpin our Personal Development curriculum and help every child understand how they can positively contribute to their school, their community and the wider world.
Our ambitious PSHE curriculum has been carefully designed to meet the needs of our pupils, combining high-quality curriculum teaching with personalised units, safeguarding education, wellbeing support and meaningful real-life experiences.
British Values in action at Parklands
Children experience British Values every day through:
- A progressive PSHE curriculum that develops knowledge, character and life skills.
- Weekly British Values and safeguarding assemblies.
- Picture News discussions that encourage respectful debate about current events.
- Floor Books which capture children's thinking, reflections, pupil voice and learning journeys.
- Mindful Monday, providing a calm and purposeful start to each week.
- Good Morning Club, supporting emotional regulation, belonging and readiness to learn.
- MindMate lessons and our trained MindMate Ambassadors, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing across school.
- School Council, where elected representatives genuinely influence decisions and help shape school life.
- Leadership opportunities including Reading Buddies, EAL Buddies, Year Group Buddies and MindMate Ambassadors.
- Diversity Role Models workshops that celebrate equality, inclusion and respect.
- Police Education sessions in Upper Key Stage 2, helping children understand the law, rights, responsibilities and personal safety.
- Careers education, employer encounters and our annual Careers Fair, broadening aspirations and helping children understand the world of work.

Democracy
At Parklands, every child has a voice.
Children learn that democracy means everyone has the opportunity to contribute, listen respectfully and influence positive change.
Children experience democracy through:
- Voting for School Council representatives.
- Pupil voice surveys and consultations.
- Decision-making within classrooms.
- Discussions and debates through PSHE, Picture News and assemblies.
- School Council projects that help improve our school community.
- Opportunities to influence whole-school initiatives and celebrations.
By giving children meaningful opportunities to participate, we help them understand that their opinions matter and that positive change happens when people work together.
The Rule of Law
Children learn that rules, laws and responsibilities help everyone to feel safe, respected and valued.
Through our curriculum and daily school life, children explore why laws exist, how they protect us and the importance of making responsible choices.
Children develop this understanding through:
- Clear classroom and school expectations.
- Restorative approaches that help children understand the impact of their behaviour.
- Police Education sessions.
- Safeguarding and online safety education.
- Visits from emergency services and community organisations.
- PSHE learning focused on rights, responsibilities, peer pressure and keeping safe.
Children leave Parklands understanding that everyone has both rights and responsibilities within a fair society.
Individual Liberty
We encourage every child to become confident, independent and resilient.

Although our local community may not reflect the full diversity of modern Britain, we ensure every child develops a deep understanding of different cultures, faiths, identities and lived experiences.
